To The Real Housewives of Hyderabad
The real housewives of Hyderabad (yes I am talking of all
those aunties in the neighborhood who could also be related to you) strangely
have an agenda against young people these days. First they pick on you for not
studying engineering, they then pick on you for marrying ‘late’ (ahem… 27 is
not late), then they try to make you feel guilty about the sadness you are inflicting
on your parents by not having children yourself. To all of you aunties, I am
still living for myself and I like it that way.
So dear aunties, do not pester me about not having children.
Do not irritate me by asking ‘oh now you have bought a house in South Africa,
so you are settling down there’ - well, what do you think? You do not need to
be curious about how many kilos of chocolates I bring for my family and friends;
you also do not need to stress yourself out due to the tiny bits of gold I wear
or do not wear. You do not need to wake your daughters up just because I am up
early, you also do not need to send your sons out of the country to compete
with me. You do not need to think that I am trying to show my legs when I wear
a skirt in the sweltering summer heat of 40°C, while it is okay for you to show your
bosom and midriff on the pretext of wearing a sari. Let me be the way I am. I
visit Hyderabad so very often to spend time with my family and not to please
you or to conform to your ridiculous and senseless queen bee rules. You also do not need to think
that I am here to give you any kind of ‘good news’.
I am not writing this to offend anyone. I am not being
sexist. I am only expressing my disappointment in how gossip and the Wisteria
Lanes of Hyderabad are stunting the mental development of very impressionable young
minds.
And now we can blame TV and chowmein for this.
